Africa’s premier Mixed Martial Arts MMA promotion One Fight Ultimate OFU is set to ignite the sprawling city of Ajegunle in Lagos in continuation of it’s Street-fight series.
The eagerly anticipated outdoor professional tournament themed AJ City Rumble has got fight fans in Ajegunle and beyond salivating for what promises to be a show stopper on 1st May 2022 at Navy Barracks from 3PM with free entry.
Four MMA gladiators have a challenge of fighting through three bouts, tournament style, to be crowned the OFU Ultimate street fighter.
The choice of staging the championship in Ajegunle which means land of riches in the Yoruba language of South Western Nigeria is instructive owing to the sporting and entertainment history of the area, inhabited by more than half a million Lagosians.
Some internationally recognized former and active footballers with glorious careers in Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, honed their skills on the dusty streets of Ajegunle.
They include 1996 Olympic gold medalist and former FC Barcelona player Emmanuel Amuneke, another Olympian Samson Siasia, Super Eagles striker Odion Jude Ighalo and Jonathan Akpoborie.
Today some of the OFU3 Street fighters are raring to make a name for themselves just like the footballers; this time around, in MMA.
‘Benue Boi’ Victor Dooga who faces ‘The Skull’ Geoffrey John in one of the semi final matchups has a huge fan base in Ajegunle where he trains:
“Already my AJ fans are looking forward to my fight at Navy Barracks.
“My gym has spread the word to the community that I will be fighting on 1st May and ever since, I have been getting numerous calls from them, enquiring about my training and state of health.
“It’s will be a huge honour for me to fight before my fans at OFU3 STREETFIGHT and I am ready to unleash my weapon on the day.”
Completing the semi final lineup at OFU3, another fighter with a huge following in Ajegunle ‘The Young Van Dan’ Nani Chima will slug it out with Imo State based Iheanyi ‘Sagon Jnr’ Agoha for a place in the 71kg weight class final.
According to OFU founder Chief Ife Obiudo, the organization is hugely cut out for youth empowerment in Nigeria:
“We are taking this game closer to the grassroots with emphasis on building role models in the fighters who will in turn help in persuading some of these boys and girls roaming the neighborhood that they can actually earn a legitimate living by taking up Mixed Martial Arts as a profession.”
Lending huge support to the event is popular Yoruba movie actor and celebrity boxing champion Jigan Babaoja who is an OFU Ambassador and will be on hand for a meet and greet with audiences.
Other side attractions include music, freebies, drinks etc.
The OFU3 STREETFIGHT is strategically a prelude to the biggest MMA event in Africa tagged OFU4: Democracy Fightnight.
The June 10, 2022 Fight Night features well conditioned and top ranking international Mixed Martial Arts gladiators at Oriental Hotel, Lagos.
